Welcome to the Lime Kiln Wood website

Lime Kiln Wood is a 5 hectare (12 acre) piece of ancient semi-natural woodland located on an east-facing limestone escarpment between Lindale and Grange in South Cumbria, United Kingdom.

There has probably been broadleaf woodland on the site since soon after the last Ice Age, although there is abundant evidence that humans have been sustainably using the wood for many years, and the limestone was quarried in Victorian times, being used on site to produce lime in a limekiln which is still standing (just).

The purpose of these web-pages is to communicate some of the wonder of this woodland gem, and hopefully to engage interested people in its conservation and enhancement.

Lime Kiln Wood is privately owned, in a Trust, by a group of enthusiastic locals who are aware that it has been used for quiet recreation for many years. Generations of local people have enjoyed walking in the wood, and we are very keen that this peaceful pastime should continue unhindered.

Our aim quite simply is to preserve and enhance the diversity of the wood and its wildlife and to use traditional skills to ensure that we can all enjoy the wood for generations to come. Read a summary of our aims
